Several new feature films including Star Wars Episode I, The Sixth Sense, new sequel Toy Story 2, first of The Matrix, Disney's animated Tarzan, The Mummy, and the highly acclaimed American Beauty were released.

- April 17 - Star Wars fans begin lining up at movie theaters in Westwood and Hollywood to buy tickets for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
- November 18 - Toy Story 2, a sequel to the 1995 film Toy Story, is released in theaters across the United States. The movie is released in the United Kingdom in February 2000.
